How do you take care of a mattress?

There are lots of ways to care for you mattress. Washing and cleaning your sheets are important for hygienic reasons, and it may also help protect your mattress from premature damage. Sheets, blankets, and pillowcases naturally accumulate sweat, body oils, and other dirt, which can gradually seep into your mattress if bedding is not regularly changed. Bedding also attracts dust mites and other allergens, which may disrupt sleep for individuals with allergies. A mattress protector fits onto a mattress under the fitted sheet. Mattress protectors are designed as a barrier to keep dirt, sweat, dust mites, moisture, and other contaminants from entering the mattress. Most mattress protectors are machine-washable.

How do I clean a stain on my mattress?

Cleaning your mattress right away may help prevent the stain from setting into the mattress fibres. Depending on what kind of stain it is, we recommend using protectors to protect against spills. Your mattress warranty can be affected if you damage it so it’s always worth checking.

How to stop a mattress from smelling?

Airing out a mattress and allowing it to breathe is important as well as turning it (if needed) and using a protector to keep out any odour.

How often should I clean my mattress?

We recommend a protector as a mattress or a professional to help as it is a specialist product.

Should I vacuum my mattress?

Some people recommend vacuuming and using bicarbonate of soda but a mattress cover will mean dust and allergens are kept out.

Do all mattresses require turning?

Not all mattresses require turning so do follow the manufacturers guidelines for the best results.

How often should I turn my mattress?

To keep your mattress in great condition, we recommend that you rotate it at least once every three months. This means moving your mattress from the head of your bed to the foot - from top to bottom. Rotating your mattress regularly is important, because it helps to keep the comfort fillings evenly distributed. Many mattresses don’t require turning however so do follow the guidelines on your product.

Should I rotate my mattress - head to toe?

To keep your mattress in great condition, we recommend that you rotate it at least once every three months. This means moving your mattress from the head of your bed to the foot - from top to bottom. Rotating your mattress regularly is important, because it helps to keep the comfort fillings evenly distributed. However, the answer depends on the design of your specific mattress. Generally speaking, most mattresses should be rotated regularly, but should not be flipped but always look at your manufacturers guidelines.

How often should I change my bed sheets?

Most people should wash their sheets once per week. If you don't sleep on your mattress every day, you may be able to stretch this to once every two weeks or so. Bed sheets can accumulate a lot of dirt and grime while you sleep such as dead skin cells and can also lay home to dust mites and are invisible to the naked eye.

How can I protect my bed?

A mattress protector accomplishes four things:

  • Keeps the mattress clean.Human bodies are pretty gross. We all perspire at night. We all produce oil from our skins. Some of us wear makeup. We all also shed dead skin cells. There are other activities that can produce a “wet spot” on the bed. All of this can soak through your sheets and into the mattress. Once a little gets into your mattress, it’s almost impossible to get it out of your mattress. A mattress protector prevents any of that from getting into the mattress and can be taken off and washed.
  • Keeps the mattress feeling in “like new” condition for longer.Perspiration (or any moisture, like spilling a drink) will wear down the foams in the mattress, shortening the comfort life. It’s a similar effect to a kitchen sponge after too many uses. Even if only a little moisture gets through, after years of every night use that adds up. You will need to replace your mattress more quickly without the protector.
  • Helps prevent dust mite allergies from acting up.Dust mite allergies are very common and can lead to issues such as sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Dust mites eat dead skin cells, and there will be dead skin cells in your mattress if you don’t use a protector.
  • Helps protect the warranty.Depending on what product you choose a stain will void the warranty. Even if the stain has nothing to do with the warranty issue, it still voids the warranty.

We sell Protect-a-bed mattress protectors in our stores and recommend them to keep your mattress looking good for longer.

When should I replace my mattress?

Even if you take very good care of it, your mattress will eventually need to be replaced. On average, a mattress lasts between 7 and 10 years before it loses its supportive and pressure-relieving capabilities. If you’ve had your mattress for several years, you may wonder if it’s time to replace it. Waking up with pain or stiffness, tossing and turning at night, or not feeling rested when you wake up are all clues that it may be time to consider a new mattress.
