Standard Size Bed Frames:
Double Bed Frame
This size is usually referred to as a 4'6" bed frame (four foot six bed frame), which is based on the traditional imperial dimensions of a double mattress. Double bed frames may also be shown as 135cm in metric width, although again, do note that this refers to the mattress and that the other dimensions of the actual bed frame are likely to be slightly wider. Double is the most popular size of bed frame, being suitable for either one or two people at a time, without taking up too much space.
There is a variation of the double bed frame which is for mattresses which are 4 feet in width, making a further saving on space but still offering a larger sleeping surface than a single size bed. Small Double bed frames tend not to be availble in as many styles as ther other sizes, but are a great option when space is at a premium.
King Size Bed Frame
King size bed for 5'0" bed frames (five foot) are the second most popular size in the UK. The offer a bit more space than a standard double - a nice bit of extra luxury if you have the space in your bedroom. The are a bit longer than a double bed frame too - three inches in fact, at 6'6" in length as opposed to 6'3". The lengths of a kingsize bed frame do refer to the size of the king size mattress which they accomodate. It's always a good idea to allow for another few inches on the legth, depending on the style of the frame and the 'chunkiness' of the head end and foot end.
Single Bed Frame
A popular choice for kids bedrooms, as well as for teenagers and houseguests, the single bed frame is based on a 3'0" mattress (often referred to as 90cm in metric). There are variations on the single size bed frame, which further help in terms of extra functionality and efficient use of space. Day beds are great when a bed doubles up as a bench or chair during the day - again great for kids and house guests. Guest beds tend to be made as a standard single bed which come with a separate fold away trundle bed, stored underneath; perfect for sleepovers. Standard bunk beds are also based on the single size, with some even having the option of being split into two sepate single bed frames at a later stage.
Super King Bed Frames
For the ultimate in luxury, super king size bed frames are made for mattresses of 6'0" x 6'6" (180cm x 200cm) - the width of two individual singles, but slightly longer. Depending on the style of frame you opt for, a super king doesn't just offer mujch more sleeping space than a double, but it also allows the design itself to shine even brighter.
Bed Frame Styles:
Styles of bed frame are broadly described by the materials they are either constructed from, or upholstered with. These styles come down to personal preference alone and no particular type offers any benefits over the other in terms of durability and quality. Sometimes the type can be defined by its functionality too. Ottoman bed frames can be constructed from wood, or upholstered in fabric, but either way allow you to lift up the mattress and store items within the frame itself. The most popular styles are:
