How does an Ottoman Bed work?
There's something at the heart of every ottoman bed which allows it to operate in such a useful way. The mattress rests on a slatted base which hinges at the upper end, so that it can be lifted clear from the storage space underneath. This is aided by a pair of gas struts either side of the base, which help you to lift the mattress and lock the frame in the open position. This is extremely useful, so that you can place and retrieve items freely, without having to hold the mattress in place yourself.
The base and mattress can be freed from this position with a simple tug, and the struts ensure the base drops back down gently.
Ottomans are actually simple upholstered boxes or chests, which double up as a seat, similar to a cushioned footstool or pouffe. They're derived from a piece of furniture which was prevalent in homes across the Ottoman Empire, although these were typically made from wood. The ethos however is what carried over to ottoman bed frames; a storage space which has a dual purpose.
