What is a sleigh bed frame?

A sleigh bed is a type of bed with distinctive curved headboard and footboard, resembling the shape of a traditional sleigh, hence the name. The design often features elegant, sweeping curves that give the bed a classic and ornate appearance. Linthorpe Beds offer sleigh beds frames in various materials and styles, making them a popular choice for adding a touch of sophistication and timeless charm to bedroom decor.

What are the types of sleigh bed frames?

Sleigh bed frames come in various styles and materials, offering a range of options to suit different tastes and bedroom decor. Here are some common types of sleigh beds:

    1. Traditional Sleigh Bed: This is the classic design with gracefully curved headboard and footboard, often made from wood and featuring intricate detailing. It embodies the timeless elegance of a sleigh, see our Bentley Designs Chantilly White Panel Bedstead for a crisp white wooden bed frame.
    2. Modern Sleigh Bed: A contemporary take on the traditional sleigh bed, these designs feature sleeker lines, minimalistic curves, and can be constructed from a variety of materials, including metal and upholstered options. A great modern sleigh bed is the Emporia Bosworth Fabric Ottoman Bed ideal for a master bedroom.
    3. Upholstered Sleigh Bed: This type of sleigh bed has a padded, upholstered headboard and footboard. It provides a softer and more comfortable surface for leaning against or resting your feet. Upholstered sleigh beds often come in a variety of fabric options, such as the Time Living Venice Sleigh Bed.
    4. Storage Sleigh Bed: Some sleigh beds are equipped with built-in ottoman storage underneath the mattress, making them practical for organizing and maximizing bedroom space.
    5. Leather Sleigh Bed: These beds have leather upholstery on the headboard and footboard, adding a luxurious and sophisticated touch to the overall design.

The choice of a specific sleigh bed type depends on personal style preferences, room decor, and the desired level of functionality.

What kind of mattress do I need for a sleigh bed?

Whilst practically any mattress will work on a sleigh bed there are things you should consider. For example, sleigh bed frames often have decorative curves and contours on the headboard and footboard In order to appreciate these details choose a mattress that is slightly thinner than the height between the base and top of the footboard.

Ultimately, the choice of mattress for your sleigh bed should be based on your personal comfort preferences, any specific health needs. It's a good idea to try out different types of mattresses in a showroom to determine which one suits you best before making a decision.

Does a sleigh bed need a base?

A box spring or divan, usually used to support the mattress and act as a brace, is not usually needed with a sleigh bed. All of our sleigh beds come with either a sprung-slatted or solid-slatted base which is more than capable of supporting your mattress and yourself.

Most sleigh beds available nowadays are also at a comfortable height to make getting into and out of bed nice and easy.

Can you just use the headboard of a sleigh bed?

We wouldn’t recommend using the headboard of a sleigh bed on a standard bed. All of our sleigh beds are self-assembly but all parts are made to be used with the bed frame only. Attempting to use the headboard with a different bed or frame could damage the headboard and could also void any warranties or guarantees.

    Are sleigh beds popular?

Sleigh beds have been around for around 200 years and remain as popular today as they did all the way back then. Some people are drawn to the romantic and traditional aesthetics of sleigh beds, while others may prefer more modern and minimalistic bed styles. It's worth noting that there are various adaptations and designs of sleigh beds, including contemporary and transitional styles, which have helped maintain their popularity by appealing to a broader range of tastes.

While sleigh beds may not be the most common bed style, they continue to be favoured by those who appreciate their classic and elegant design, and they remain a popular choice for adding a touch of sophistication to bedroom interiors.

What sizes are sleigh beds available in?

Sleigh beds are available in all UK standard sizes from double to super king, and all are made to be statement pieces for standard and master bedrooms. These beds are crafted to be more than just functional pieces of furniture; they are expressions of elegance and style, intended to command attention and enhance the overall aesthetics of the sleeping space. Whether you have a modest bedroom or a more spacious master suite, a sleigh bed is meant to be a centrepiece that adds a touch of sophistication and grandeur, making your bedroom a place of comfort and visual delight.

    Do sleigh beds have slats?

All of the sleigh beds we stock either come with a sprung-slatted base or a solid-slatted base, depending on how much support you need. See our selection of sleigh beds, and if you have any further questions please contact us via email or via telephone on 01642 613684.
